Navigating Support Systems: Where to Start When You Need Help

Finding support during a difficult time can feel overwhelming. Whether you are facing housing instability, struggling with access to public benefits or healthcare, looking for mental health support, or simply unsure where to begin, knowing which door to walk through can be one of the hardest steps.
At STAY, we believe people should not have to navigate complex systems alone. Support is not always about finding one perfect resource - it is often about finding the right connection, with someone who will support you in taking the next step.
Start With What You Need Today
Some common starting points include:
Housing Support:
If you are worried about losing your housing, facing eviction, or experiencing homelessness, reaching out early can make a difference.
Consider connecting with local housing organizations, legal aid assistance programs, and community support providers.
Benefits & Basic Needs:
If you are struggling to afford food, healthcare, transportation, or other basic needs, there may be resources available to help create greater stability.
Visit your local County Department of Social Services or food pantry for immediate assistance accessing food and other basic neccessities.
Mental Health & Recovery Support:
If you are feeling overwhelmed, struggling with your mental health, experiencing substance use challenges, or looking for support in your recovery journey, you do not have to navigate it alone.

For ongoing support, consider connecting with local outpatient mental health counseling clinics, peer support services, recovery programs, or support groups.
Care Coordination
If you have visited the emergency room for physical or mental health concerns, have difficulty getting connected to doctors, struggle with keeping or getting to appointments due to barriers, or feel overwhelmed trying to navigate multiple doctors, specialists, providers, and appointments, care coordination may help you find and maintain the support you need.
To learn more about care coordination, you can reach out your regional Social Care Network, local county mental health department or primary care physician.
You Do Not Have to Navigate Resources Alone
Reaching out for help can be difficult, especially when systems feel complicated or when previous attempts to connect have not worked. Sometimes the first step is simply having someone help identify what options are available and what makes sense for you.
STAY helps individuals navigate resources, overcome barriers to connection, and identify next steps based on their own needs and goals.
